At the end of February 2023 the Research School of Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS) of the Helmholtz Institute Jena organized already its 10th edition of its “Joint RS-APS & HGS-HIRe Lecture Week”. With this the Research School is not only celebrating its “Lecture Week anniversary” but also returned for the first in person event after the Corona pandemic.
The event took place at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. For four consecutive days, 17 students got to know the four different research areas of the APPA collaboration at FAIR. Prof. Christian Graeff introduced the students to the Biophysics program and Prof. Christina Trautmann taught the students the various aspects of the material research department at GSI and the future FAIR facility. The lectures in the morning were complemented with an introduction to software programs for the planning of radiation treatments and for the calculation the ion transport in matter. Prof. Malte Kaluza gave an inside view of the generation of high energetic particles using high power laser systems representing the plasma physics part of the Lecture Week. Atomic physics using highly charged ions at the accelerator infrastructure in Darmstadt was explained in detail by Dr. Pierre-Michel Hillenbrand and was complemented with afternoon exercises to deepen the understanding. The Lecture Week closed on the fifth day with a participant poster session. During the session accompanied by a small brunch at the new building of the Helmholtz Institute Jena the students had the possibility to present their own thesis research projects to the others. The poster session as well as the rest of the Lecture Week was very well received by the participants with the request for the continuation of such events.
